Junior Parent Letter
September 14, 2018
Dear Parents/Guardians of a ZMHS Junior:
The upcoming year is an important one in planning for your son/daughter’s future. The following are some activities and resources available throughout the year that might help in planning for the years beyond high school.
As a junior, students can visit with the college/service representatives that come to Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School. These visits are listed on our website and on our daily announcements. Representatives schedule visits from two and four-year colleges and from all branches of the military. Students should see me for a pass to visit with that representative. Juniors can also be excused from school to visit colleges.
If your son/daughter is planning on attending a four-year college they will need to take the ACT test. We will be offering this test at ZMHS in April. We will also be offering an ACT prep course during the school day. More information will follow this winter.
The ACT test can be taken as many times as desired and colleges always take the highest score. If your son/daughter chooses to take the test earlier than this spring they must test at a different location. All registration materials are available online at www.act.org. Deadlines for registration are approximately a month prior to the test. Our school code will be needed and is 242-765.
On October 10th the PSAT test will be given at Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School. This is an optional practice SAT test and the results are not used for college entrance. This test can qualify a student for the National Merit Scholarship if their score is high enough. A booklet with additional information and sample questions is available in the counseling office.
In late October there is a National College Fair in Minneapolis. We will be providing a bus for those that would like to attend. See the permission slip below for more information.
As far as applying to college, students can begin applying as early as the summer prior to their senior year. All college applications are available online. When applications are completed students should let me know so that an official transcript can be sent to that college. Students can not apply for financial aid, grants, and loans using the FAFSA form until after October 1 of their senior year. Those forms are available online. Financial aid workshops are available statewide every winter as well.
Please feel free to email or call me with any questions and know that you and your son/daughter can stop in my office anytime if you desire more information.

Dear Parents/Guardians of juniors:
The National College fair is held at the Minneapolis Convention Center on October 24th and 25th. We will be taking a bus there on October 24th. There is also an evening session. More information can be found at www.nacacfairs.org
Zumbrota Mazeppa juniors are invited to attend this event. We will have a bus transporting students to this event. Following the event, we will be going to Burnsville Mall for lunch. Please have your son/daughter bring money along. You must have the permission slip below signed and returned to the high school office by Wednesday, October 17th. We have a very rigid deadline for bussing purposes.
Prior to the college fair you can save time by registering your personal information and creating a personal barcode to be scanned at the fair by colleges that you are interested in. Students can do this at gotomyncf.com before coming to the fair.
I give permission for my son/daughter to ride the bus to the National College Fair on Wednesday, October 24th, 2018. I realize that my son/daughter is responsible for meeting at the bus at the designated time.

Please return this form by Wednesday, October 17th. Late permission slips or phone calls the day of the fair will not excuse the student. We need the final number early on for bussing purposes.
