Dear Parents/Guardians of a ZMHS Junior:
The upcoming year is an important one in planning for your son/daughters future. The following are some activities and resources available throughout the year that might help in planning for the years beyond high school.
As a junior, students can visit with the college/service representatives that come to Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School. These visits are listed on our website and on our daily announcements. Representatives schedule visits from two and four-year colleges and also from all branches of the military. Students should see me for a pass to visit with that representative. Juniors can also be excused from school to visit colleges.
A college transitions specialist from Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) is also here every Wednesday afternoon. The role of this person is to work specifically with those students who are unsure of the path they would like to take. Assistance is given in looking at what colleges offer as majors, help with the financial aid process, along with any general questions that students may have regarding their options after high school.
If your son/daughter is planning on attending a four-year college they will need to take the ACT test. We will be offering this test at ZMHS in April. More information will follow this winter.
The ACT test can be taken as many times as desired and colleges always take the highest score. If your son/daughter chooses to take the test earlier than this spring they must test at a different location. All registration materials are available online at www.act.org. Deadlines for registration are approximately a month prior to the test. Our school code will be needed and is 242-765.
On October 11th the PSAT test will be given at Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School. This is an optional practice SAT test and the results are not used for college entrance. This test can qualify a student for the National Merit Scholarship if their score is high enough. The cost is $16 and students must sign up with me. Checks must be made to Zumbrota Mazeppa High School. A booklet with additional information and sample questions is available in the counseling office.
On October 26th there is a college fair at Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC). We will be providing a bus for those that would like to attend. See the attached permission slip for more information.
As far as applying to college, students can begin applying as early as the summer prior to their senior year. All college applications are available online. When applications are completed students should let me know so that an official transcript can be sent to that particular college. Students can not apply for financial aid, grants, and loans using the FAFSA form until after October 1 of their senior year. Those forms are available online. Financial aid workshops are available statewide every winter as well.
Please feel free to email or call me with any questions and know that you and your son/daughter can stop in my office anytime if you desire more information.
